Porters and Guides on Kilimanjaro: Who They Are
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable adventure, but behind every successful summit is a dedicated support team of porters and guides. These unsung heroes are the heart of every trek. For first-time climbers, understanding their role is essential not only for safety but also for appreciating the human effort that makes your journey to the Roof of Africa possible.
At Mandari Travel, we are proud to work with some of the most experienced and ethically treated guides and porters on Kilimanjaro.
Who Are the Porters?
Porters are the backbone of every Kilimanjaro expedition. These hardworking individuals carry most of the equipment and supplies you’ll need during your trek.
Responsibilities of Porters Include:
- Carrying tents, food, and your main duffel bag (up to 15kg)
- Setting up camp before your arrival
- Fetching water and helping with basic camp logistics
- Assisting climbers when needed, especially on challenging terrain
You’ll be amazed at their strength, stamina, and cheerful attitude—even at high altitudes.
Fun Fact: Porters typically carry 20kg–25kg including their own gear, walking ahead to set up camp before you arrive.
Who Are the Guides?
Your Kilimanjaro guide is your leader, safety monitor, motivator, and mountain expert. All guides must be certified by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and have extensive training in high-altitude trekking.
A Guide’s Responsibilities:
- Leading the group along the correct route
- Monitoring your health and acclimatization
- Making emergency decisions if symptoms of altitude sickness appear
- Sharing information about local culture, flora, and fauna
At Mandari Travel, our guides have years of experience, excellent English (and often other languages), and a genuine passion for helping climbers achieve their dream.
Why Ethical Treatment Matters
Unfortunately, not all operators treat their porters fairly. That’s why Mandari Travel is committed to ethical climbing standards, following guidelines set by KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project).
We ensure:
- Fair wages and proper tipping structures
- Adequate meals and shelter for all crew members
- Proper load limits (no more than 20kg per porter)
- Transparent porter support policies
Choosing a responsible operator means your adventure uplifts local communities too.
Tipping Guideline
Tipping is customary and deeply appreciated by the support team. As a general guide:
- Lead guide: $20–25 per day
- Assistant guides: $15–20 per day
- Cooks: $10–15 per day
- Porters: $8–10 per day per porter
Mandari Travel provides a detailed tipping guide and helps organize group tipping ceremonies at the end of the trek.
