The Best Kilimanjaro Route for Acclimatization: Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route is widely considered the best route for acclimatization on Mount Kilimanjaro. Here’s why:
Longer Duration
Lemosho typically takes 7 to 8 days, giving your body more time to adjust to the altitude gradually.
Gradual Ascent
The route offers a slow and steady climb, with well-paced elevation gains and opportunities to “climb high, sleep low.”

Other Good Routes for Acclimatization
While Lemosho is the top choice, two other routes also offer excellent acclimatization profiles:
1. Machame Route (6–7 Days)
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers scenic views and a great acclimatization profile. It’s slightly more challenging than Lemosho but well-paced.
2. Northern Circuit (8–9 Days)
The longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit offers maximum acclimatization time. It’s ideal for those who want a quieter trail and are focused on safety and success.
Routes to Avoid for Acclimatization
We don’t recommend the Marangu Route (5 days) or the Rongai Route (short version) if you’re concerned about acclimatization. These routes are shorter and offer less time to adjust, increasing the risk of altitude sickness.
