Do You Need a Visa to Enter Tanzania?
Yes, most international travelers need a visa to enter Tanzania. The good news is that the process is simple and can often be completed online before you arrive.
Types of Visas for Safari Travelers
- Ordinary (Tourist) Visa – This is the most common visa for travelers coming for a holiday or safari. It allows a single entry and is valid for up to 90 days.
- Multiple Entry Visa – If you plan to leave Tanzania and re-enter (for example, if you’re visiting Kenya or Rwanda during your trip), a multiple-entry visa might be more suitable.
- East Africa Tourist Visa – This special visa allows you to visit Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda under one visa. However, Tanzania is currently not part of this program as of the latest update—so be sure to verify before applying.
How to Apply for a Tanzania Tourist Visa
There are two main ways to apply:
1. eVisa (Online Application)
You can apply online through Tanzania’s official immigration website:
Steps include:
- Fill out the application form
- Upload a passport-size photo and copy of your passport
- Pay the visa fee online (usually $50 USD for most countries, and $100 USD for U.S. citizens)
- Wait for approval (usually takes 5–10 business days)
2. Visa on Arrival
You can also obtain a visa at major entry points, including:
- Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam)
- Kilimanjaro International Airport
- Zanzibar International Airport
Note: Visa on arrival can lead to longer wait times, so we recommend the eVisa option for a smoother arrival experience
Entry Requirements and Travel Documents
To enter Tanzania, you’ll need:
- A valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your date of entry
- A return or onward ticket
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
Yellow Fever Vaccination
Travelers coming from countries where yellow fever is endemic are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate. If you’re transiting for more than 12 hours in such countries, the requirement also applies.
