Zanzibar Tides and Ocean Swims: When It’s Best

Timing Your Beach Days Right on the Spice Island

Zanzibar’s coastline is famous for its powdery white beaches, turquoise water, and calm lagoons, but did you know the island’s tides play a major role in your swimming experience?

Understanding Zanzibar’s tides can help you plan the perfect beach day or ocean swim, especially on the east coast where the tide changes are more dramatic.

At Mandari Travel Zanzibar, we help you choose the best beaches, times, and activities based on the ocean’s rhythm. Here’s everything you need to know about Zanzibar tides and when it’s best to swim.

Why Do Zanzibar’s Tides Matter?

Zanzibar experiences two high tides and two low tides every day, with shifts of up to 3.5 meters, especially on the east coast. That means the same beach can look very different within a few hours!

  • High tide – perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and beach fun
  • Low tide -shallow waters, long sandbanks, and great reef walks

The key is knowing where you are and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Best Time and Places to Swim in Zanzibar

1. Nungwi & Kendwa (North Coast)Swim Anytime

The northern beaches are least affected by tides, making them ideal for swimming at almost any time of day.

Perfect for: All-day swimming, sunset dips, and families with kids
Best time to visit: Year-round; tides are gentle here

2. Paje & Jambiani (East Coast) Plan Around the Tides

On the east coast, the ocean can recede hundreds of meters at low tide, revealing a wide coral plain. While it’s not ideal for swimming, it’s great for reef walks, kite surfing, and photos.

Perfect for: Morning or afternoon swimming during high tide, reef exploration during low tide
Best time to visit: Check tide charts in advance (we’ll help!)

3. Matemwe & Kiwengwa Snorkeling at High Tide

These beaches offer excellent snorkeling just offshore, but only during mid to high tide. At low tide, the water may be too shallow for swimming or boating.

Perfect for: Calm high-tide swims, snorkeling trips to Mnemba Atoll
Best time to visit: Morning high tides, especially during full moon periods
