Physical Fitness for Gorilla Trekking: What You Need to Know.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences on the planet. Deep in the misty forests of Uganda and Rwanda, visitors can observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, a once in a lifetime encounter. But before embarking on this incredible journey, it’s important to understand one essential factor: physical fitness.

At Mandari Travel, we want you to be fully prepared for the trek, both physically and mentally. Here’s everything you need to know about getting fit for gorilla trekking.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek

Gorilla trekking is not your average hike. Depending on the location of the gorilla family on the day of your trek, you may walk for anywhere from 30 minutes to over 6 hours through dense rainforest, slippery slopes, high altitudes, and muddy terrain. Some parts of the trail require uphill climbs and navigating through thick vegetation. That’s why a reasonable level of physical fitness is not just helpful, it’s essential for both your safety and enjoyment.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be in good health and capable of walking for several hours. If you can handle a moderate hike with some elevation gain and uneven ground, you’ll likely manage the trek just fine.

We recommend preparing with:

  • Cardiovascular training (walking, jogging, swimming or cycling)
  • Leg strengthening exercises (squats, lunges, stair climbing)
  • Endurance training (long-distance walks or hikes with a backpack)

The better your fitness level, the more comfortable and rewarding your trek will be.

Tips to Prepare Physically

  1. Start walking or hiking 4–6 weeks before your trip.
  2. Include stair climbs to simulate steep terrain.
  3. Practice with a daypack (5–7 kg) to get used to carrying essentials.
  4. Stretch regularly to improve mobility and reduce injury risk.

Altitude may also play a role, especially in areas like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. If you’ve never hiked at altitude, take it slow and stay well hydrated.

What to Bring on the Trek

  • Comfortable hiking boots (broken in)
  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirt
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Gloves (to protect your hands from thorns and mud)
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration pack
  • Energy snacks

A walking stick is often provided by your guide and comes in handy for balance.
