How to Get to Volcanoes National Park for Gorilla Trekking.

Planning a gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park? You’re in for one of Africa’s most unforgettable wildlife adventures. But before you can lock eyes with a mountain gorilla, you’ll need to know how to get there. In this complete guide from Mandari Travel, we’ll explain everything you need to know about traveling to Volcanoes National Park, safely, comfortably, and on time.

Where is Volcanoes National Park Located?

Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda, near the town of Musanze (formerly known as Ruhengeri). The park lies within the Virunga Mountains, a chain of extinct and active volcanoes shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

From Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city, the park headquarters in Kinigi are approximately 110 kilometers away a scenic 2.5 to 3-hour drive through rolling hills and rural countryside.

Best Way to Get to Volcanoes National Park

The easiest and most comfortable way to reach Volcanoes National Park is by road. Mandari Travel offers private, air-conditioned transfers from Kigali directly to your lodge or the park headquarters. Whether you’re starting from Kigali International Airport, a city hotel, or even the border with Uganda, we’ll arrange everything to suit your schedule.

Benefits of booking your transfer with Mandari Travel:

Can You Fly to Volcanoes National Park?

  • Professional, English-speaking driver-guide
  • Safe, reliable 4×4 vehicles
  • Flexible departure times
  • Stops for photos, coffee, or local experiences along the way

There is currently no airport directly serving Volcanoes National Park. All travelers must access the park by road. That said, you can fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL) and connect to the park the same day. If your international flight arrives early enough, a same-day transfer and even same-day trekking is possible (with prior permit arrangements).

We recommend arriving at least a day before your trek to rest and enjoy the Rwandan countryside.

Suggested Travel Timeline

For morning gorilla treks, you must arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for your briefing. If you’re staying in Kigali, this means leaving around 4:30 AM. Alternatively, staying overnight in Musanze or nearby lodges is a more relaxed option.

Sample travel plan:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kigali, transfer to Musanze with Mandari Travel
  • Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
