A Day in the Life on Kilimanjaro

Wondering what your daily routine will look like while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro? Whether you’re preparing for your first trek or just curious about life on the mountain, this guide walks you through a typical day on Kilimanjaro, from morning wake-up to stargazing under the African sky.

At Mandari Travel, we believe that knowing what to expect helps you prepare mentally and physically for your adventure.

6:30 AM – Wake-Up with Tea and Stunning Views

Each morning begins with a friendly knock on your tent and a steaming mug of tea or coffee delivered by one of our porters. You’ll unzip your tent to views of sunrise over the mountain slopes, fresh alpine air, and the sounds of nature all around.

7:00 AM – Warm Breakfast & Health Checks

Head to the mess tent for a hearty breakfast, typically porridge, eggs, toast, fruit, and more. During this time, your guide will do a health check, including your heart rate and oxygen saturation, to monitor how you’re adjusting to the altitude.

8:00 AM – Pack Up and Hit the Trai

After breakfast, you’ll prepare your daypack (water, snacks, camera, jacket) while porters pack up camp and carry the bulk of the gear. The trek begins at a relaxed pace: “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) is the motto on Kilimanjaro to help with acclimatization.

12:00 PM – Scenic Lunch Stop

Around midday, you’ll break for lunch, either at a scenic rest stop or camp, depending on the route and day. Meals include a mix of carbs and protein, rice, pasta, vegetables, and meats, to fuel your hike.

1:00 PM – Continue to Camp

The afternoon stretch usually involves 2–4 hours of hiking, depending on the day’s itinerary. As you ascend, the landscape changes, from rainforest to moorland to alpine desert. Your guide sets the pace and ensures you stay hydrated and energized.

4:00 PM – Arrive at Camp and Rest

Once at camp, you’ll settle into your tent, enjoy snacks and tea, and rest your feet. You might take a short acclimatization hike or just relax and take in the views.

6:00 PM – Dinner and Briefing

Dinner is served in the mess tent, usually soup, a main course, and dessert. After dinner, your guide will brief you on the next day’s route, altitude, and tips. This is also a good time to ask questions or journal your experience.

8:00 PM – Sleep Under the Stars

Evenings are early on the mountain. You’ll crawl into your sleeping bag by 8 or 9 PM. With minimal light pollution, Kilimanjaro offers incredible stargazing, especially from higher camps.
