Best Time for Scuba Diving in Zanzibar

Plan Your Dive Trip with the Perfect Timing

Zanzibar is one of the top scuba diving destinations in East Africa ,and for good reason. With crystal-clear waters, thriving coral reefs, and a diversity of marine life, the archipelago offers dive experiences for all levels. But when is the best time to go scuba diving in Zanzibar?

At Mandari Travel, we create unforgettable, ocean-focused getaways ,and this guide will help you time your trip for ideal underwater visibility, weather, and marine encounters.

Best Time to Dive: June to October & December to Marc

June to October (Dry Season)

  • Conditions: Calm seas, low rainfall, and cooler temperatures
  • Visibility: 20–30 meters
  • Marine Life: Reef fish, octopus, nudibranchs, and occasional turtles
  • Ideal For: Beginners and experienced divers alike

This is a perfect time for diving on Zanzibar’s north and west coasts, including Mnemba Atoll, Tumbatu Island, and Kendwa Reef.

December to March (Warm & Dry)

  • Conditions: Warm water (~28°C), little rain
  • Visibility: Often up to 30 meters
  • Marine Life: Reef sharks, dolphins, manta rays in some spots
  • Ideal For: Deep diving, underwater photography, advanced divers

This is a great time for south coast dive sites, including Kizimkazi and Paje, where pelagic sightings are more common.

Worst Times to Dive: April–May & November

  • April–May: Long rains bring choppy seas and reduced visibility.
  • November: Short rains can affect water clarity and surface conditions.

Diving is still possible during these months, but if you’re looking for the best underwater experience, we recommend planning your trip outside of these windows.

Top Dive Sites in Zanzibar

  • Mnemba Atoll: Most popular, with stunning coral walls and reef fish
  • Leven Bank: Deep diving with barracuda, tuna, and sometimes sharks
  • Tumbatu Island: Known for soft corals and macro marine life
  • Paje & Jambiani: Excellent for drift diving and spotting rays

What Marine Life Can You Expect?

  • Year-round: Parrotfish, clownfish, groupers, snappers, moray eels
  • Seasonal: Dolphins (July–October), turtles (June–September), whale sharks (rare but possible sightings near Mafia Island)
