Kilimanjaro Packing List: What You Really Need
Packing the right gear is essential for a safe and successful Mount Kilimanjaro climb. The mountain’s five climate zones mean you’ll need to prepare for everything from hot rainforest trails to freezing summit temperatures.
At Mandari Travel, we provide all clients with a detailed gear guide, but here’s a breakdown of what you really need to pack for your Kilimanjaro trek.
Essential Clothing for All Weather Conditions
Base Layers
- 2–3 moisture-wicking T-shirts (synthetic or merino wool)
- 2 moisture-wicking thermal tops
- 2 thermal leggings or long underwear
Insulation Layers
- 1 fleece or softshell jacket
- 1 down or synthetic insulated jacket (very warm)
- 1 pair of insulated hiking pants (optional for summit night)
Outer Layers
- Waterproof and windproof shell jacket with hood
- Waterproof pants
Trekking Pants & Shirts
- 2–3 pairs of trekking trousers
- 1–2 long-sleeve shirts (for sun protection)
- 1 pair of shorts (optional for lower altitudes)
FootwearWell-broken-in hiking boots (waterproof with ankle support)
- Camp shoes or sandals
- 3–4 pairs of wool or synthetic socks
- Gaiters (for keeping mud and scree out of boots)
Headwear & Accessories
- Warm hat or beanie (for summit night)
- Sun hat or cap
- Balaclava or buff for wind/dust
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Headlamp with extra batteries
Gloves
- Lightweight liner gloves
- Waterproof, insulated gloves or mittens (essential for summit night)
Sleeping Gear
- 4-season sleeping bag (rated to at least -10°C/14°F)
- Sleeping bag liner (for extra warmth)
- Sleeping mat (usually provided, confirm with your tour operator)
Daypack and Duffel
- Daypack (25–35L) for personal items, snacks, and water
- Duffel bag (90–100L) for porters to carry your main gear (max 15kg)
- Dry bags or packing cubes to organize and waterproof your gear
Hydration & Nutrition
- 2–3L hydration system (CamelBak or water bottles)
- Water purification tablets or filter (optional but useful)
- Personal snacks (energy bars, trail mix, electrolyte tablets)
Toiletries & Personal Items
- Biodegradable soap and toothpaste
- Wet wipes (showers are not available)
- Toilet paper (bring your own!)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Basic first-aid kit (pain relievers, blister care, altitude meds)
Optional But Helpful
Trekking poles (highly recommended for descents)
- Power bank or solar charger
- Journal or Kindle
- Lightweight towel
- Zip-lock bags for electronics
