Mount Meru vs. Kilimanjaro: Which Should You Do First?
If you’re planning a high-altitude trek in Tanzania, chances are you’ve heard of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. While Kilimanjaro is the star attraction, Meru offers its own unique challenges and many climbers wonder: Should I climb Mount Meru before Kilimanjaro?
At Mandari Travel, we guide climbers on both peaks and can help you choose the right sequence for your goals, timeline, and fitness level.

Acclimatization | Ideal pre-Kili training | Requires prior prep |
Why Climb Mount Meru First?
1. Acclimatization Advantage
Meru is an excellent warm-up climb. If you’re concerned about altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro, climbing Meru first helps your body adapt gradually to lower oxygen levels.
2. Skill Building
The Meru climb includes steep ridgelines and narrow paths, offering great exposure to trekking conditions without the extreme elevation of Kili.
3. Fewer Crowds, More Wildlife
Located in Arusha National Park, the Meru trail passes through forests full of buffalo, giraffes, and monkeys ,a truly wild experience with fewer hikers.
Why Go Straight to Kilimanjaro?
If you’re on a tight schedule or are already well-acclimatized (due to altitude experience or training), you might head straight for Kilimanjaro. Choose a longer route like Lemosho or Northern Circuit to help your body adjust over time.
Mandari Tip: If you’re confident in your fitness and want to save time or budget, climbing Kilimanjaro directly is doable ,but good training and preparation are essential.
Best of Both Worlds: Meru + Kilimanjaro Combo
Many climbers opt for a Mount Meru + Kilimanjaro combo trip, especially if coming from sea level.
- Meru helps with pre-acclimatization
- Gives you two summits in one journey
- Allows time to adjust to Tanzanian climate and altitude
Ideal itinerary: 4 days on Meru, 1–2 rest days in Moshi, then 7–8 days on Kilimanjaro.
What Mandari Travel Recommends
- New to high altitude? Start with Meru
- Climbing Kilimanjaro in under 7 days? Meru first is highly recommended
- Experienced trekker or short on time? Kilimanjaro first is fine—with proper training
- Want the full Tanzanian trekking experience? Do both!
