COVID-19 Travel Rules for Kenya Safari in 2025
Planning a Kenya safari in 2025? While the global pandemic has eased, it’s essential to stay informed about the current COVID-19 travel requirements to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here’s what you need to know:
Entry Requirements
As of August 2025, Kenya has lifted most COVID-19 entry restrictions. However, travelers should be aware of the following:
- Vaccination Proof: Travelers are no longer required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon arrival.
- Pre-Departure Testing: A negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure is not mandatory for entry into Kenya.
- Health Surveillance: Travelers exhibiting flu-like symptoms upon arrival may be required to undergo a COVID-19 antigen test at their own expense. If the antigen test is positive, a subsequent PCR test may be required, also at the traveler’s expense.
- Children: Children under the age of five are exempt from COVID-19 testing requirements.
Please note that these regulations are subject to change. It’s crucial to check for updates from official Kenyan government sources or your airline closer to your travel date.
Health and Safety Protocols
While Kenya has relaxed many COVID-19 restrictions, certain health protocols remain in place to ensure the safety of travelers and residents:
- Symptomatic Travelers: Travelers exhibiting flu-like symptoms upon arrival will need to complete a passenger locator form on the ‘Jitenge’ platform.
- Testing Requirements: Symptomatic travelers will be required to undergo a COVID-19 antigen test upon arrival, with the cost borne by the traveler. If the antigen test result is positive, a subsequent COVID-19 PCR test will be required, again at the traveler’s expense.
Visa Requirements
Kenya has abolished visa requirements for all foreign visitors as of January 2024. Instead, travelers are required to register for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to visiting Kenya. The eTA application process is quick and efficient, and approval is typically sent via email shortly after submission.
- Application: Applications can be submitted up to 90 days prior to travel and must be submitted at least 3 days in advance.
- Fee: The eTA fee is USD 32.50.
- Validity: The eTA is valid for single entry and allows re-entry if traveling to other East African Community countries.
- Requirements: Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter) and a yellow fever vaccination certificate if traveling from an endemic country.
Health Recommendations
While not mandatory, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends certain vaccinations for travelers to Kenya:
- Yellow Fever: Required for travelers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.
- Routine Vaccinations: Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date, including measles, mumps, rubella, and influenza.
- Malaria Prophylaxis: Depending on your itinerary, malaria prophylaxis may be recommended.
