Gorilla Families in Rwanda: Know Who You’ll Meet.
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a once in a lifetime experience, offering close encounters with one of the world’s most awe-inspiring creatures, the endangered mountain gorilla. Nestled within the misty rainforests of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda is home to over a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Before embarking on this unforgettable journey, it helps to know who you’ll meet on the trail.
In this guide, Mandari Travel introduces you to the incredible gorilla families of Rwanda and what to expect during your trek.
Meet the Gorilla Families of Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park currently hosts over 12 habituated gorilla families, each with its own unique dynamics and personalities. These families are visited by tourists daily, with only 8 permits issued per group to minimize disturbance.
1. Sabyinyo Family – The Gentle Giants
Named after Mount Sabyinyo, this group is one of the easiest to trek. Led by a dominant silverback, this family is known for its calm behavior and often attracts first-time trekkers.
2. Amahoro Family – Peaceful and Friendly
Amahoro means “peace” in Kinyarwanda, and true to its name, this group is known for its gentle temperament. The trek to meet them is moderate in difficulty and offers scenic views of the forested hills.
3. Umubano Family – Living in Harmony
Formed after a split from the Amahoro group, Umubano is a tight-knit family led by a strong and confident silverback. They often stay close to human trails, making the trek manageable.
4. Susa A Family – The Original Stars
This is the largest and most famous gorilla family, once studied by Dian Fossey. It’s a challenging hike to reach them, but the reward is unforgettable, a large family of over 30 members, including playful juveniles and dominant silverbacks.
5. Hirwa Family – The Lucky Ones
Though the Hirwa family has sometimes migrated between Rwanda and Uganda, they are still one of the most sought-after groups. Their playful nature and frequent sightings of twins make them a favorite among trekkers.
Other notable families include Kwitonda, Agashya (Group 13), Igisha, Karisimbi, and Muhoza, each offering a unique experience depending on their location and social dynamics.
What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek
Trekking to see mountain gorillas can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the group’s location. Expect steep slopes, dense vegetation, and high altitudes, but also breathtaking landscapes and life-changing moments when you find the gorillas.
Your time with the gorillas is limited to one hour, giving you the chance to observe, photograph, and connect with these majestic primates in their natural habitat.
