Where to See Chimpanzees in Rwanda

Rwanda is often celebrated for its mountain gorillas, but the country is also one of the best places in Africa to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat. With lush rainforests, rich biodiversity, and experienced guides, Rwanda offers travelers the chance to come face-to-face with our closest relatives. If you’re planning a primate safari, here’s where to see chimpanzees in Rwanda.

Nyungwe National Park – The Premier Destination

The Nyungwe National Park, located in Rwanda’s southwest, is the country’s most famous destination for chimpanzee trekking. This ancient rainforest spans over 1,000 square kilometers and is home to more than 500 chimpanzees.

Treks usually begin early in the morning, as chimps are most active at dawn. Visitors set out with expert guides and trackers, following vocal calls and movements through the forest. Once you find them, the experience is magical watching chimps swing through the canopy, groom each other, and forage on the forest floor.

Beyond chimpanzees, Nyungwe also offers sightings of colobus monkeys, mangabeys, and countless bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers.

Cyamudongo Forest – A Hidden Gem

Adjacent to Nyungwe lies Cyamudongo Forest, a smaller but equally rewarding destination for chimpanzee trekking. The forest is home to a habituated group of chimpanzees, giving visitors an intimate experience in a more compact area.

Treks here are often less strenuous than those in Nyungwe, but they still provide incredible opportunities for photography and observation. If you’re short on time or want a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience, Cyamudongo is an excellent choice.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park – Rwanda’s Newest Park

The lesser-known Gishwati-Mukura National Park, in Rwanda’s northwest, is another place to see chimpanzees. This park is smaller and less visited, but its conservation efforts are significant. Home to a small population of chimpanzees, as well as golden and L’Hoest’s monkeys, Gishwati offers a unique and less-crowded trekking experience.

It’s ideal for travelers who want to combine chimpanzee trekking with cultural experiences in nearby communities and eco tourism initiatives.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Rwanda

Chimpanzee trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are the most favorable. Trails are less slippery, and trekking conditions are easier. However, the wet season brings lush greenery and fruit abundance, making chimps easier to find.

Tips for a Successful Chimpanzee Trek

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
  • Bring a lightweight rain jacket Nyungwe is a rainforest and showers are common.
  • Carry water, snacks, and insect repellent.
  • Keep a safe distance from chimpanzees and follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Bring a good camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.
