The climb begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the trailhead at Momella Gate, where trekkers meet their guides and porters before starting the ascent. The initial section winds through dense rainforest, alive with monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. The lower slopes are rich with giant ferns, camphor trees, and towering mahogany, offering a serene trekking environment that feels remote and untouched. The trail gradually ascends, providing opportunities for photography, nature observation, and interaction with the knowledgeable guides who share insights about the local flora, fauna, and volcanic geology.

As the trek progresses, the rainforest gives way to open grasslands and volcanic slopes, with sweeping views of the surrounding plains and, on clear days, distant Mount Kilimanjaro. By spreading the climb over four days, trekkers have more time to adjust to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and increasing the likelihood of a successful summit. Evening camps are set at strategic points, allowing climbers to rest and enjoy the mountain’s tranquility.

The highlight of the trek is the early morning summit push, where climbers ascend under the stars to reach the peak in time for sunrise. From the summit of Mount Meru, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic vistas of the crater, the Arusha plains, and nearby peaks. Descending along the same trail, the trek concludes at Momella Gate, followed by a transfer back to Arusha for a well-earned rest, celebration, and overnight stay.
