Unusual Safari Animals You Can Spot in Tanzania
Beyond the Big Five: Discover Tanzania’s Rare and Fascinating Wildlife

Tanzania is known around the world for its majestic lions, towering elephants, stealthy leopards, rhinos, and buffalo—the legendary Big Five. But the country’s wilderness is also home to some unusual safari animals that you may not expect to see. These rare, shy, or simply fascinating creatures add a unique layer to your safari experience.

At Mandari Travel, we craft custom safaris that go beyond the ordinary, taking you into the heart of Tanzania’s diverse ecosystems to discover wildlife both iconic and surprising. Here are some of the unusual animals you can spot in Tanzania—and where to find them.

1. African Wild Dogs (Painted Wolves)

With their mottled coats, oversized ears, and strong social bonds, African wild dogs are some of the most endangered predators in Africa. They are rare but increasingly seen in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) and Ruaha National Park, where populations are better protected.

Wild dogs are known for their teamwork and high hunting success rate. Spotting a pack on the move is a thrilling and unforgettable moment.

2. Aardvark

The aardvark is one of Africa’s most elusive nocturnal animals. With its pig-like snout and rabbit-like ears, it looks like a creature out of a fairy tale. Aardvarks dig deep burrows and emerge at night to feast on ants and termites.

You might get lucky in Ruaha, Katavi, or during a night game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, where rare sightings occasionally occur.

3. Pangolin

Highly secretive and heavily trafficked, the pangolin is one of the most unique mammals you can encounter. Covered in protective keratin scales, it curls into a tight ball when threatened. These solitary creatures feed on ants and are almost impossible to spot—making any sighting extremely special.

While pangolins are rare across Africa, a few have been spotted in Serengeti, Tarangire, and Rungwa Game Reserve.

4. Genet and Civet

Both genets and civets are nocturnal, cat-like creatures with long tails and distinctive markings. While shy, they are sometimes seen in camps during the evening or on night safaris.

They play an important ecological role by controlling rodent populations and spreading seeds, and their graceful movements make for a delightful sighting.

5. Lesser Kudu

This stunning antelope with spiraled horns and striking white stripes is rarely seen in northern Tanzania. Your best chance to spot a lesser kudu is in the southern parks like Ruaha or Mikumi, where they inhabit dense bushland.

Their shy nature makes them a prized find for keen-eyed safari-goers and wildlife photographers.
