What Happens After You Summit Kilimanjaro
Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) is a moment few forget. But what happens after you take those summit photos, soak in the sunrise, and begin your descent? At Mandari Travel, we guide you through every step of the journey, including what comes after the summit.
Here’s what to expect:
1. A Short Celebration at the Peak
The summit is cold, windy, and oxygen-deprived, so climbers typically spend no more than 10–15 minutes at the top. You’ll take photos with the famous Uhuru Peak sign, hug your guides, and take in the awe-inspiring views before heading down for safety.
2. A Long Descent Begins
After the summit, you begin the long descent to lower altitude, usually all the way down to Millennium Camp or Mweka Camp, depending on your route.
- The descent can take 5–7 hours after summit day.
- It’s steep and hard on the knees, so trekking poles and sturdy boots are essential.
- The good news? The air gets thicker and breathing gets easier with every step.
Your body will begin to feel better as oxygen levels rise, and you’ll start to regain your appetite and energy.
3. One Final Night on the Mountai
Your final camp is typically at 3,000m or lower, and this last evening is much more relaxed. Expect:
- A hearty meal prepared by your chef
- A celebration with your guides and porters
- Optional tipping ceremony (we’ll guide you on how to do this respectfully)
- Lots of laughter, relief, and shared memories
This is often one of the most emotional and joyful parts of the climb.
4. Descend to the Gate and Receive Your Certificate
The final day involves a 3–5 hour hike to the exit gate, usually Mweka Gate. You’ll sign out of the national park, and then…
You’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro Climbing Certificate!
- Green Certificate if you reached Stella Point
- Gold Certificate if you reached Uhuru Peak
These certificates are a badge of honor and proof of your incredible achievement.
5. Return to Your Hotel for Rest & Recover
Once off the mountain, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned shower, soft bed, and celebratory meal. Many climbers say this is one of the best nights of their lives.
6. Optional Add-Ons: Safari, Zanzibar & Mor
Don’t let the adventure stop there! Many of our climbers extend their trip with:
- A Big 5 safari in Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater
- Relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar
- Cultural tours around local villages or coffee farms
Let Mandari Travel help you build the perfect post-climb itinerary.
