What to Wear for a Kilimanjaro Climb

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a thrilling challenge, and dressing properly can make or break your experience. From rainforest trails to icy summit slopes, temperatures on Kilimanjaro can range from +20°C (68°F) to -20°C (-4°F) in a single climb. Knowing what to wear—and how to layer—is essential for comfort, safety, and success.

The Golden Rule: Layering

The key to staying warm and dry on Kilimanjaro is layering. You’ll need:

  1. Base layers to wick away sweat
  2. Insulation layers to trap heat
  3. Outer layers to protect against wind and rain

Mandari Travel provides a detailed packing list for all our trekkers—but here’s a breakdown of essential clothing.

Base Layers: Stay Dry

Purpose: Moisture-wicking, keeps sweat off your skin

  • 2–3 moisture-wicking thermal tops (synthetic or merino wool)
  • 2 pairs of thermal leggings
  • Sports bras and moisture-wicking underwear for women

Avoid cotton—it holds moisture and can make you cold.

Mid Layers: Stay Warm

Purpose: Insulation against the cold

  • 1–2 fleece jackets or pullovers
  • Lightweight down or synthetic insulated jacket
  • Fleece pants or softshell trekking trousers

These layers keep you warm during chilly mornings and higher altitudes.

Outer Layers: Stay Protected

Purpose: Weatherproofing against wind, rain, and snow

  • Waterproof, breathable rain jacket (GORE-TEX recommended)
  • Waterproof rain pants
  • Windproof summit jacket (insulated parka for summit night)

These are your barriers against Kilimanjaro’s extreme elements.

Footwear: Traction and Comfort

  • Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots
  • Comfortable camp shoes (like Crocs or sneakers)
  • Wool or synthetic hiking socks (4–5 pairs)
  • Gaiters (to keep dirt and snow out of boots)

Gloves & Headwear

  • Thin liner gloves (for layering)
  • Insulated, waterproof gloves for summit night
  • Wool/fleece hat
  • Buff or neck gaiter
  • Sun hat or cap for lower altitudes
  • UV-protective sunglasses

Nightwear and Extras

  • Warm sleepwear
  • Lightweight down pants (optional but great for camp nights)
  • Hand/foot warmers
  • Headlamp with extra batteries

Don’t Overpack!

Porters carry up to 15kg per trekker, including your sleeping bag and gear. Pack smart and keep essentials in your daypack: snacks, water, camera, sunscreen, and an extra layer.
