Originally used as a prison for rebellious slaves in the 1860s and later as a quarantine station, the island is now best known for its giant Aldabra tortoises—some of which are over 150 years old. Visitors can walk among these gentle creatures, feed them, and learn about their conservation.

The island also offers a chance to explore the ruins of the old prison and quarantine buildings, which stand as a reminder of Zanzibar’s colonial past. Your guide will share stories of the island’s history while you wander through the remains.

After the heritage exploration, enjoy time to swim, snorkel, or relax on the beach. Surrounded by turquoise waters and coral reefs, Prison Island is a great spot for marine life viewing and soaking in Zanzibar’s tropical beauty before returning to Stone Town.
